The latest report from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission paints a concerning picture of the mental health landscape for young people in New Zealand. The findings reveal that nearly a quarter of young individuals are grappling with high levels of psychological distress, a figure that has more than doubled in the last decade. This trend is particularly alarming, as it highlights the growing mental health crisis among the youth, with Māori, Pacific peoples, young people, and disabled individuals bearing the brunt of this burden. The data also underscores the stark disparity in access to specialist services, with a significant decline in referrals and a widening gap in unmet needs for Māori. The commission's chief executive, Karen Orsborn, attributes this distress to the challenging world young people inhabit, including online harm and the global environment. The report further highlights the alarming rates of intentional self-harm requiring hospitalisation among young people, nearly three times the overall average. The use of seclusion, or solitary confinement, in mental health facilities remains a critical issue, with Māori being disproportionately affected. Despite government efforts to minimise its use, the number of people subjected to seclusion is still unacceptably high. The Mental Health Bill, currently before Parliament, aims to further reduce the use of seclusion, particularly for individuals under 18 years of age. The bill is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the issue, with the national director for mental health and addictions, Phil Grady, acknowledging the progress made since 2009 but recognising the ongoing challenges. The report's recommendations include the development of a national seclusion plan and the inclusion of specific data collection for high-needs populations. Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey acknowledges the progress made in improving access to support and the mental health workforce, but emphasises the need for continued efforts to address the unique challenges faced by young people. The commitment to reducing the use of seclusion and improving data collection and service provision is a positive step forward, but the underlying issues of psychological distress and unmet needs persist. The Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission's findings serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support for young people, particularly those from marginalised communities. The government's efforts to address the crisis are a welcome development, but the long-term sustainability of these initiatives remains a critical question. As the nation grapples with the mental health crisis, the focus on young people and their unique challenges is a necessary and encouraging step towards a more compassionate and supportive healthcare system.
